Located in the Sierra Juaréz Mountains near Oaxaca, the Zapotec village of Teotitlán del Valle is home to some of the most celebrated textile and carpet weavers in all of Mexico.
The wool is grown on local sheep three hours into the mountains and has traditionally been dyed with natural pigments including the
cochineal bug, indigo, pomegranate, and marigold flowers. Over 30 different colors have been produced.
Serving as the main industry in Teotitlán del Valle, there are over 2,000 weavers in the
village. Both men and women work the looms, creating traditional designs as well as modern works of art.
